The Menicon Logo
The Menicon Logo: Representing Our Consistent Safety, Advanced Technology, and Zeal
The Menicon logo is circular in shape, representing the cornea and our contact lenses, in the red and green corporate colors.
The red and green are based on the commonly used red/green eye chart.
Passion Red represents our unique products and the zeal that drives our service, while Techno Green signifies the emphasis our advanced technologies place on safety assurance.
The white line in the center is the limitless horizon.
Envisioning New Horizons
Menicon pursues safety right from the research and development stage.
R&D Center
Our top priority is the health and safety of our customers' eyes. The R&D Center was founded in 1995 to integrate our research departments, and our cutting edge research encompasses the following fields.
Basic research
We are conducting basic and applied R&D to develop new contact lens materials, lens care products and intraocular lenses. We are also working on future medical treatments.
Product development
We are dedicated to developing and applying synthesized materials for new lenses. Our efforts include material analysis and performance evaluations as well as lens prototyping.
Clinical evaluations
We work together with doctors at university hospitals and medical institutes worldwide to ensure the safety and corrective effects of our lenses. We also examine lens care products and care systems.
Enzyme research offers new hope for environmental friendliness
Our groundbreaking enzyme research has opened up new possibilities.
While developing lens care solutions, we discovered a new kind of bacteria that produces cellulase, an enzyme with superior plant fiber degradation properties.
We have developed a rice straw decomposition agent that assimilates agricultural residue, and a decay-accelerating agent for pruned tea plant twigs. Both are now commercially available.
Substantial data indicates that these products help to control greenhouse gas production, opening up possibilities for new fields of research offering a significant social contribution.
Achieving ongoing advancements in safety
The eyes need a constant supply of oxygen even when wearing contact lenses. In 1979, we introduced Menicon O2, the pioneering oxygen-permeable rigid contact lens.
Since then we have developed a succession of products such as the highly oxygen-permeable Menicon EX. In 1997, we launched Menicon Z, a rigid lens boasting world-class oxygen permeability.
Menicon Z was approved by the FDA in 2002 for 30 days' continuous wear.
Safety and comfort in the next generation of contact lenses
Menicon PremiO features silicone hydrogel, a type of next-generation material that is rapidly gaining popularity.
This lens was developed by arranging the alignment and binding of molecules to create a new silicone compound with high oxygen permeability, and a new amido compound that retains moisture.
Leading-edge technology supports safety and innovation
We aim to apply our advanced research to developing comfortable contact lenses with new functionality.
Developing lens materials requires research on safety performance at the gene level, as well as chemical structure and analytical techniques at the molecular level.
Menicon PremiO is a stress-free lens boasting superior oxygen permeability and moisture.
Menicon Z was approved by the FDA in 2002 for 30 days continuous wear.
Certification
Our commitment to quality
Menicon's unique leading-edge technologies enable safe manufacturing.
EN ISO 13485 & CE Mark Certification
The Menicon head office, along with Menicon Ltd. (UK), Menicon BV (Netherlands), and Menicon Pharma (France), have acquired and maintain certifications of compliance with EN ISO 13485 and the European Medical Device Directive (MDD).
Menicon successfully passed these intensive audits and received certifications of compliance for the established Quality Management System according to EN ISO 13485 (EN ISO 13485: Medical Devices - Quality Management Systems - Requirements for regulatory purposes).
As a part of this certification process, mdc as the Notified Body for Menicon’s head office certifies that Menicon's Quality Management System is in conformity with MDD (Council Directive 93/42/EEC concerning Medical Devices). As a result, Menicon is authorized to label their manufactured medical devices with CE Mark.
Quality standard compliance:
Ensuring high quality worldwide
After stringent audits, our head office in Nagoya, Japan, has received compliance certification for EN ISO 13485 (Medical devices - Quality management systems - Requirements for regulatory purposes) international quality assurance standards. Menicon's global quality policy is to consistently provide safe, high quality products to all our customers worldwide.
Techno Station:
Manufacturing technology development base
Techno Station was founded in 2002 as a base for developing manufacturing technologies for ophthalmic devices such as contact lenses. Together with the R&D Center, the Techno Station forms part of a unified in-house R&D system covering everything from materials to manufacturing methods. We are developing technology to enable mass production of high value-added products within short timeframes.
Seki Factory:
High-quality contact lens manufacturing
Newly-developed technology is installed on three automated lines producing three types of high quality lenses: rigid lenses, soft lenses, and silicone hydrogel lenses. World-class cutting technology produces both rigid and soft contact lenses. The unique Menicon Automated Manufacturing System (MAMS) ensures centralized management of manufacturing data and meticulous quality control. For Menicon PremiO, we developed a unique molding process to achieve maximum production volumes and create a thinner lens edge.
CAD is used for detailed structural design because mold shapes vary according to lens specifications. Manufacturing data is recorded for accurate traceability. The factory conforms to Japan's Quality Management System (QMS) regulations, as well as fulfilling requirements related to the EN ISO 13485 international quality assurance standards for medical devices and the FDA Quality System Regulation (QSR).
Menicon Nect Gujo Factory:
Manufacturing lens care products
Menicon Nect Gujo Factory produces lens care products. This involves the whole process from formulating solutions to manufacturing and filling sealed containers. Our meticulous safety management ensures that containers remain free from bacteria right up until the customer removes the lid. The entire factory is automated and controlled by computers for superior manufacturing efficiency, and every product is visually checked for a consistently outstanding level of safety and quality.
