We hereby announce that Menicon Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture; CEO: Hidenari Tanaka, hereinafter referred to as “Menicon”), Tokyo Century Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Koichi Baba, hereinafter referred to as “Tokyo Century”), and KYOCERA Communication Systems Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Kyoto City, Kyoto; President: Yoshihito Kurose, hereinafter referred to as “KCCS”) have launched a donation-type corporate PPA service (in-house power generation support service) that will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Note

Menicon aims to achieve a sustainable society through the provision of products and services that help society while making efforts to harmonize people, society, and the global environment. In doing so, we position climate change as an important issue and promote efforts toward achieving a decarbonized society in Japan and overseas. We have installed solar power generation facilities on the roof of the Menicon Kakamigahara Plant (Kakamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture) and launched a donation-type corporate PPA service that uses the generated electricity derived from regenerative energy at the plant.

In this service, Tokyo Century and KCCS will bear the costs and handle the procedures required for the introduction of solar power generation facilities, such as initial investment. This initiative incorporates donation to public service corporations and NPOs to promote activities for achieving the SDGs into a conventional corporate PPA contract, in which solar power generation systems can be introduced with “zero initial investment.” We believe that this holds many advantages to our customers who support the SDGs, as they can freely select the donation recipient, including having an amount equivalent to the donation borne by Tokyo Century.
Menicon is involved in the development of rich forests that produce water, which is essential to our product manufacture. It also has been engaged in a reforestation project in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture since 2011. In this donation-type corporate PPA, Tokyo Century donates to Environmental Relations (Present Tree in Hida Takayama), a recognized NPO, that carries out tree-planting and nurturing activities in cooperation with Menicon.

In addition, we have adopted solar power generation systems manufactured by KYOCERA with proven long-term reliability (*1), including operation at high output for more than 36 years, and operation and maintenance (O & M) will be conducted by KCCS, which has a long track record in this field.

Going forward, the three companies will continue to contribute to achieving a sustainable society by using renewable energy, donations to organizations conducting activities to achieve the SDGs, etc., not only through energy decarbonization but also through more proactive efforts to protect the environment.

*1 KYOCERA established the Sakura Solar Energy Center (Sakura City, Chiba) in 1984. The polycrystalline silicon type solar power generation system installed at the Center is still operating with only 17.2% output loss after 36 years of operation.
The value of 17.2% is calculated by considering external factors, such as measurement accuracy and variation of output characteristics while using the actual data as the basis. Analysis results by KYOCERA can be accessed using this link.

The “Present Tree” project was started in January 2005 by Recognized NPO Environmental Relations, which aims to simultaneously achieve reforestation and regional development. They plant a mixture of tree species that were among the original vegetation in the area and regenerate forests similar to the natural forests over 10 years in areas where forestation is required for various reasons, such as the need to replace forests lost due to natural disasters and areas that need conservation as countryside forests.
