Wenzhou Medical University Eye Hospital in China
On Tuesday, June 30, 2020, Menicon Co., Ltd. concluded a business tie-up agreement with Wenzhou Medical University Eye Hospital and School of Ophthalmology & Optometry (hereinafter “WMU”), which have outstanding research track records in the field of ophthalmology in China.
WMU was established in 1958. At present, it owns national platforms such as the Visual Science Research and Ophthalmology Disease Clinical Center, as well as the Myopia Diagnosis and Treatment Technical Center certified by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China*. It is China’s top-level educational institution for clinical medicine, education, and research in the field of ophthalmology.
Menicon has cooperated with WMU for over ten years and has worked to spread and develop contact lenses in China. On this occasion, as Menicon made Wenzhou FocuSee Vision Care Technologies—a contact lenses manufacturing company established by WMU—its wholly-owned subsidiary, the two companies reinforced their relationship further, and finalized a new business tie-up agreement, aimed at the growth and development of ophthalmology treatment in China. Major tie-ups include the following.
- Interchanges in the field of clinical research of special contact lenses, and development of products
- Fostering and training of medical specialists and students for prescribing special contact lenses
- Interchanges in the field of advanced medicine, for example, suppression of myopia progression, and
remote diagnosis/treatment
With this tie-up, Menicon will work in unison with China’s top scientific research institution to focus on the myopia progression suppression sector, which has been extensively studied in recent years, and promote (a) the research and development of special contact lenses such as orthokeratology lenses and lenses for irregular corneas and (b) the development of programs to educate and train physicians to prescribe these lenses to patients. By so doing, we will accelerate the R&D and spread of Menicon Group’s products in the Chinese ophthalmology market.
